Red Spide Mite - The Pest
Feed on leaves causing speckling on soft leaved plants and discolouration on fleshy-leaved plants, ultimately causing leaf drop. They are quite slow moving and produce a fine silk which can eventually cover the plant. They are normally very pale in colour with two distinct spots on either side of their body. They only go red when they are over-wintering. They feed on virtually all plants under protection, and outdoors soft fruit, soft leaved vegetables (e.g. runner beans) and some ornamentals can be badly damaged. Glasshouse whitefly - The Pest
Small white flying insects with sedentary larval stages (scales) which feed on plant sap weakening the plants. The scales, which produce copious amounts of honeydew, are difficult to see, being a light creamy colour. Crops grown outdoors are not normally attacked (but may be attacked by other types of whitefly), but indoor crops are vulnerable, with tomatoes, cucumbers, fuchsias and soft-leaved ornamentals being examples of the most susceptible hosts.

The Pest
Feed on grass roots from September and through to the following summer and are the legless greyish brown larvae of the crane fly (daddy long legs). They pupate in the summer and adults emerge, sometimes in huge numbers, in August ready to lay eggs again. The larvae weaken the lawn which can then be pulled up by birds feeding on the larvae. Larvae may move from lawn areas to neighbouring flower beds.
